Match Report: Jollilads 1-0 Sunrise Place

Right from the kick-off, Jollilads maintained a high line and pressured Sunrise into punting long hopeful balls. Like the earlier game, we dominated proceedings but could not find a killer touch in front of goal.

In the first half, a superb cross from the right found Yusoff at the far post but his first touch let him down when it looked like he was going to get his first goal of the season.

In the 2nd half, coach Arasu made some tactical changes - 4-4-2 instead of a more conservative 4-2-3-1, and switching the positions of certain personnel. With the game still goal-less, Cheng Kang and Weihao were brought on for some much needed firepower in attack. Weihao put his size (body as well as his head) to good use and was a physical threat to the Sunrise defence.

Cheng Kang got in on the action when his long punt high into the sky (somehow Yusoff was also invovled but your dear reporter couldnt remember) dropped just beneath the crossbar, where the keeper succeeded only in punching the ball into his own net. However, due the confusion surrounding the goal and with Cheng Kang uncontactable when the reporter interviewed the team, Yusoff was awarded with the goal. (Dear Cheng Kang, if we have done you any injustice, pls let this reporter know).

The goal came as a huge relief as the jollilads' efforts were duly rewarded. The team should be applauded for the hard work and commitment shown during the game, the relentless pressure despite the tired legs, never giving up despite Sunrise parking in front of the goal till sunset... final score 1-0 to jollilads.

Jollilads are now 3rd on the table behind leaders SCC and Tiong Bahru, with Prisons 2 points behind having played 1 game less.

With more than half the season gone, Aaron still tops the goal scorers' chart with 2 goals.

Starting lineup: weiyang, feroz, jerry, king yau, jerome (cheng kang), shahril, zhiwei, yusoff, fong, chris, fuhang (weihao)
unused sub: Aaron

hey guys, i shall keep this short and sweet.

it's always great to win. but we need to do some serious thinking abt our performance.(ok.. not the face the wall kind, less serious, but still called 'serious thinking') no doubt we did well, but we are not putting the ball into the net as often as we like to; it's not everyday that the gk will punch the ball in for us.

for one, we are not showing enough urgency in the final 3rd of the field. urgency is not abt rushing the play; it is abt quick and controlled passes, and movements off the ball to create space for our teammate, or into space to receive the ball. we need to break away from the habit of just standing there, hoping to receive the ball, and then have to do the extra work of holding off the opponent. and please realise that the tighter the opponent stick to u, the less likely you will get the ball.

we shd realise by now that quick touches in the final 3rd break down defences easier than just holding onto the ball. as much as we can, we should play the quick touches in the final 3rd and put in as many balls as we can into the box.. of course we need ppl in the box to pounch on them too. we can do it, we showed glimpses of that, and now we need to do that more consistently and make that our style of play.

one more thing, there were instances where we got stuck near the opposition byline/corner flag, with no support in sight, dont know how many of you will do it, but i certainly will - play the ball off the opponent to get a corner, rather than losing it altogether. we shd know that we have the strength in the air as well. get the corner and let our big guys who have a gd header get into the box. think aaron and feroz (jerry gonna kill me).

guys, lets get our act together and aim to score 2 goals per match. its definitely within our reach.

i'm putting this across is so that everyone realise what we need to do to move forward. please view this comment as something constructive. (i am not hinting, even subtly, that i should be allow to demonstrate my explosiveness as a striker) SERIOUSLY, we should not be just satisfied with a win, we should aim for a win with style.

cheers
wy
