Match Report: Jollilads 1-0 Sunrise Place

Right from the kick-off, Jollilads maintained a high line and pressured Sunrise into punting long hopeful balls. Like the earlier game, we dominated proceedings but could not find a killer touch in front of goal.

In the first half, a superb cross from the right found Yusoff at the far post but his first touch let him down when it looked like he was going to get his first goal of the season.

In the 2nd half, coach Arasu made some tactical changes - 4-4-2 instead of a more conservative 4-2-3-1, and switching the positions of certain personnel. With the game still goal-less, Cheng Kang and Weihao were brought on for some much needed firepower in attack. Weihao put his size (body as well as his head) to good use and was a physical threat to the Sunrise defence.

Cheng Kang got in on the action when his long punt high into the sky (somehow Yusoff was also invovled but your dear reporter couldnt remember) dropped just beneath the crossbar, where the keeper succeeded only in punching the ball into his own net. However, due the confusion surrounding the goal and with Cheng Kang uncontactable when the reporter interviewed the team, Yusoff was awarded with the goal. (Dear Cheng Kang, if we have done you any injustice, pls let this reporter know).

The goal came as a huge relief as the jollilads' efforts were duly rewarded. The team should be applauded for the hard work and commitment shown during the game, the relentless pressure despite the tired legs, never giving up despite Sunrise parking in front of the goal till sunset... final score 1-0 to jollilads.

Jollilads are now 3rd on the table behind leaders SCC and Tiong Bahru, with Prisons 2 points behind having played 1 game less.

With more than half the season gone, Aaron still tops the goal scorers' chart with 2 goals.

Starting lineup: weiyang, feroz, jerry, king yau, jerome (cheng kang), shahril, zhiwei, yusoff, fong, chris, fuhang (weihao)
unused sub: Aaron

Friendly against Ji Nan Uni (China)

Combined Uni 2 - 0 Ji Nan University

Goals in either half from Zhiwei and Fong gave the combined uni boys a comfortable 2-0 win over the visitors from China.

The match began tentatively as we were unsure of the standard of the boys from China. From the kick off, Ji Nan began stroking the ball around in their own half and had players who were speedy. Their right mid and striker caused some problems for King Yau and the defence initially, but soon faded when we started to put early pressure on their players.

With the sweltering Singapore weather showing no mercy, the Chinese boys began to tire and we started to stroke the ball around and created a couple of goalscoring chances. This trend continued in the 2nd half and we ended up 2-0 winners.

Team lineup (rolling sub): tim, jerry, aaron, weihao, king yau, alvin, zhiwei, khai, yusoff, cheng kang, pramod, yujun, fong, shahril

Match Report: Jollilads 3-1 Tiong Bahru

Determination. Discipline. Character.

All 3 were in abundance at the Serangoon stadium when Jollilads beat joint leaders Tiong Bahru 3-1 in a clean and keenly fought match.

With several former S League players among their ranks, coach Arasu warned that this match will be a stern test of the team's potential and development and mentioned the 3 traits that would determine the game:

1. The Discipline to stay organized, simple, and unaffected by the referee or the opponents.

2. The  Determination to keep going even when your legs cannot carry you and the will to rise above the opposition.

3. The Character to play football the way it should be played even if the chips are down.

Once the game got going, Tiong Bahru, with their 3-5-2 formation, showed their quality with their patient passing and movement. From a long ball, the Jollilads defence was caught off guard as their attempts to play the blatantly offside Tiong Bahru striker allowed the winger to ghost in from an onside position, and play in a low cross that was tapped in. 1-0 to Tiong Bahru.

Showing great character, the boys from Jollilads continued plugging away and were rewarded within 5mins of the goal. A long clearance from Shahril was misjudged by the Tiong Bahru centre back, allowing Aik Leong a clear run on goal. With the other defenders closing in, Aik Leong calmy placed the ball to the other side of Effendy Sabtu's dive (former SAF goalkeeper).

From a Jollilads corner, Yusof's attempt on goal was deflected towards Fuhang who headed the ball into the net.

In the 2nd half, Tiong Bahru looked to get back into the game by bringing on their more attack minded players. However from a corner once again, Juffri's floater was sidefooted by Chris into the bottom corner of the net. 3-1 to Jollilads.

Although they had a 2 goal lead, the boys from Jollilads continued running their socks off. Midfielders tracked back to cover the defence, defenders flung their bodies at shots, strikers chased down and hurried the opponents... Aaron epitomized this spirit by sprinting 50m to chase down a long punt toward the Tiong Bahru corner flag. After his initial confusion of finding himself at the wrong end of the field and with the Tiong Bahru defenders desperately chasing back, Aaron brought the ball into the box and attempted to pick Aik Leong out with a low cross. Alas the top scorer could only send his cross into the defender.

Despite continued pressure from Tiong Bahru, Jollilads held out strongly to win 3-1.

Now, to perform at this level week in week out.

Remember... Discipline. Determination. Character.

Match Report: Balestier 0-2 Jollilads

Apologies for the long overdue match report...

Last Saturday, with their exams over, the Jollilads turned out in full force at the Serangoon Stadium for the clash with bottom side Balestier.

Under the scorching sun, the younger boys from Jollilads were expected to outlast the older Balestier players. Early in the 1st half, Fong was put through by Juffri and he was clear on goal, 1 on 1 with the keeper.  It was quite a sight seeing the rather hefty Balestier keeper spring up into mid-air with his body parallel  to the ground, defying gravity, and with his outstretched arms could only parry Fong's left footed shot into the net. 1-0 to Jollilads!

As with every other game, the referee became the focal point of the game. With his tough-as-nails exterior and RSM style of authority, the referee angered both sets of players with his unwillingness to communicate his decisions and his willingness to threaten anyone who opposes his decisions. But enough bout the refs, lets get back to the game....

There were moments of high quality moves with the ball being played out of defence to midfield, and subsequently a glorious ball to the other flank setting our wingers free to penetrate the opposition. Despite a lack of training, this understanding augers well for the team.

In the 2nd half, Jollilads continued to attack and were rewarded when Khairul won a penalty which he duly converted to make it 2-0. Alvin's tenacity and aggression upfront was a source of inspiration for the team as he continually heckled and tackled the Balestier defenders, forcing mistakes and winning possession for the team. Fresh legs were brought on and the team saw out the game efficiently with a 2-0 win.

Starting lineup: Harpreet, Feroz, Aaron, Jerry, Chris, Pramod, Zhiwei, Juffri (Harold), Khairul (Yujun), Fong (Aik Leong), Alvin

Reminder - pls remember to bring boots, shin pads and 2 sets of attire for our games. (ahem king)
